Check the recipient's unit and whether the limit means less than or at most. These compression presets keep the existing convention of 1 KB = 1024 bytes. Photo requirements lets you choose decimal KB, binary KiB or exact bytes explicitly.
IDPhotos tries different JPG or WebP quality settings, then checks the actual encoded file, including metadata. It keeps the selected pixel dimensions and format. If compression cannot meet the limit, it blocks download so you can adjust the requirements. PNG stays lossless and is not silently converted when oversized.

Is the photo compressor free?
Yes — completely free, no signup and no limit on how many photos you compress. The whole tool runs in your browser, so there is no server cost to pass on.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. Compression happens entirely on your device; the image never leaves your browser. That makes it safe for ID photos and other sensitive documents.
Will compressing to a small size ruin the quality?
JPG and WebP use lossy compression, so a smaller limit can reduce detail. Pixel dimensions stay unchanged. Review the exported portrait yourself; the tool does not guarantee visual quality or acceptance by the recipient.
How exact is the KB target?
The limit is checked against the final integer byte count, including metadata, without a positive tolerance. Less than (<) excludes the boundary; at most (≤) includes it. Files that cannot meet the configured limit are not downloaded.
Which formats can I compress?
Studio lets you choose JPG, PNG or WebP output. JPG and WebP support quality-based compression. PNG stays lossless; if it exceeds the limit, download is blocked rather than converting it to another format.
